LEAF Programme
Short description
LEAF is an international school programme that uses ecosystems and outdoor learning as entry points for environmental understanding, scientific observation and action competence. It promotes hands-on activities, field exploration and learner connection with local natural environments, including forests and broader ecosystems. This is a strong good practice for ECOTEACH because it demonstrates how environment-based learning can structure science and mathematics learning around authentic phenomena rather than isolated textbook content. The approach supports disadvantaged learners by making use of nearby outdoor spaces, encouraging experiential learning, and creating opportunities for participation that do not rely on advanced infrastructure. It also strengthens observation skills, ecological understanding and interdisciplinary thinking, while helping schools build a lasting culture of place-based sustainability education.
