Project-Based Learning (PBL) in Science Education

Short description
Project-Based Learning (PBL) is a student-centred educational methodology where learners acquire knowledge and skills by working on real-world problems and producing meaningful projects. In Türkiye, this approach is widely used in STEM education, environmental awareness programmes, and sustainability-focused school initiatives supported by the Ministry of National Education and various educational organisations.
Students work collaboratively to investigate environmental challenges, design solutions, create prototypes, and present their findings. Typical projects include recycling systems, renewable energy models, sustainable city designs, biodiversity campaigns, and environmental awareness activities.
Within the Environment-Based Learning (EBL) framework, Project-Based Learning enables students to integrate science, mathematics, technology, and environmental education through practical and interdisciplinary experiences. Learning becomes meaningful because students directly apply academic knowledge to real environmental situations affecting their communities.
In Türkiye, many STEM classroom applications developed by the Ministry of National Education include project-based environmental activities where students investigate sustainability issues and create practical STEM-oriented solutions connected to local environmental contexts.
