Problem-Based Learning in STEM Education
Short description
Problem-Based Learning (PBL) is a student-centred pedagogical approach applied in Greek STEM education contexts, including Skills Labs and project-based activities. It involves presenting students with real-world problems and guiding them to investigate, analyse and propose solutions. This methodology is highly relevant for ECOTEACH, as it connects science and mathematics with environmental challenges such as pollution, energy use and sustainability. Students work collaboratively, apply scientific reasoning and use mathematical tools to explore solutions.
PBL is particularly suitable for secondary education (ages 12–18), as it promotes critical thinking, analytical skills and decision-making. It is also effective for disadvantaged learners, as it encourages active participation and provides multiple ways to engage with content beyond traditional instruction. Teachers can adapt PBL to different classroom contexts, making it a flexible and transferable approach. By focusing on real-life environmental issues, it enhances motivation and supports meaningful learning.
