Field-Based Environmental Learning (KEPEA Methodology)
Short description
Field-Based Environmental Learning is a pedagogical approach implemented in Greece through Environmental Education Centres (KEPEA). It focuses on experiential learning in real-world environments, where students observe, investigate and analyse natural and human-made ecosystems. This methodology is highly relevant for ECOTEACH, as it embodies the principles of Environment-Based Learning (EBL) by connecting classroom knowledge with direct environmental experience. Students engage in activities such as field observations, data collection and environmental analysis, integrating science and mathematics in authentic contexts.
The approach is particularly suitable for secondary education (ages 12–18), as it supports deeper understanding of environmental systems and promotes critical thinking. It is also beneficial for disadvantaged learners, as it provides hands-on learning opportunities that reduce dependence on abstract instruction. Teachers can adapt field-based learning to local environments, making it accessible and highly transferable. By linking theory with practice, it enhances engagement and supports meaningful learning outcomes.
