POSEIDON System – Marine Environmental Monitoring and Forecasting
Short description
The POSEIDON System is a Greek marine environmental monitoring, forecasting and information system developed by the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research. It provides access to weather, ocean, wave, ecosystem and sea-level information for the Greek seas, including forecasts and observation data. It is relevant for ECOTEACH because it allows teachers to connect science and mathematics with real marine environmental conditions, which is especially meaningful for Greek coastal and island schools. Classroom examples may include comparing wave height and wind direction, interpreting sea temperature maps, discussing marine heatwaves, studying currents and pollution movement, or analysing how marine data support environmental protection. The tool is appropriate for disadvantaged schools because it is freely accessible online and can be used through teacher demonstration, printed screenshots or shared student devices. It supports inclusive learning through visual maps, real-world examples and group-based interpretation tasks. It also gives students opportunities to see how mathematics, data and environmental science are used in authentic monitoring systems.
