Service-Learning in Education
Short description
Service-Learning (Aprendizaje Servicio) is an educational methodology that combines academic learning with community service. It is widely implemented in Spain as an approach that connects classroom learning with real social and environmental needs, promoting active citizenship and student engagement.
In this approach, students participate in projects that address real community challenges while developing academic competences. Activities often include collaboration with local organisations, environmental initiatives, and social projects, allowing students to apply theoretical knowledge in practical contexts.
Within Environment-Based Learning (EBL), Service-Learning provides a strong framework for connecting STEM education with real-world environmental issues. Students can engage in projects related to sustainability, environmental protection, or community improvement, using scientific and mathematical knowledge to design solutions.
This methodology is particularly relevant for disadvantaged educational contexts, as it promotes inclusion, participation, and motivation. It allows students to see the impact of their work, strengthening their sense of responsibility and connection with their community.
