Service-Learning for Environmental Education
Short description
Service-Learning is a pedagogical methodology widely implemented in Spain that combines academic learning with community service. In environmental education, this approach enables students to participate in real actions that improve their local environment while developing curricular competences.
Students may engage in activities such as biodiversity protection, waste reduction campaigns, urban greening, or awareness initiatives in collaboration with local organisations and public institutions. These projects allow learners to apply scientific and mathematical knowledge in meaningful and socially relevant contexts.
Within the Environment-Based Learning (EBL) framework, Service-Learning is especially valuable because it connects classroom learning with real environmental challenges and active citizenship. Students learn through direct participation, reflection, and collaboration with their community.
This methodology is particularly relevant in disadvantaged educational contexts, as it promotes inclusion, motivation, and a sense of belonging. It provides multiple ways to participate and helps students understand that their learning can generate positive change in their surroundings.
