Participatory Learning for Sustainable Communities
Short description
Participatory Learning is an educational approach that promotes active involvement of learners in identifying local challenges, analysing needs, and co-designing solutions with others. In Spain, this methodology is increasingly used in community and environmental education projects that connect schools with neighbourhoods, municipalities, and civil society organisations.
Students engage in collaborative processes such as mapping local issues, discussing priorities, collecting data, and proposing actions related to sustainability, mobility, public spaces, or environmental improvement. These experiences strengthen communication, teamwork, and problem-solving competences.
Within the Environment-Based Learning (EBL) framework, participatory learning transforms the local community into a living learning environment. Students learn through interaction with real people, places, and environmental situations, linking theory with practice.
This methodology is especially relevant for disadvantaged educational contexts, as it values student voice, promotes inclusion, and creates meaningful learning opportunities connected to daily life. It helps learners develop confidence, responsibility, and civic engagement.
